H-GAC Releases Draft 2025 Regional
Transportation Plan
What does the future hold for our region's transportation
system?
The Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) has released
the final draft of the 2025 Regional Transportation
Plan (RTP) to the public and will begin the public comment
period.
This revised draft of the plan, following the latest
round of public meetings, is a look ahead to the year
2025 to identify long-range transportation needs; prioritize
and fund programs and projects; and recommend ways to
enhance our transportation system, while improving air
quality in Houston and the surrounding counties.
Public Comment Period Extended
to May 4, 2004
Public input is a major part of the success of the
RTP, ensuring that shared values and concerns can be
put into positive action for Houston's future. To provide
an open forum for public comment on the revised draft
of the 2025 RTP, H-GAC is hosting a kickoff meeting
on Tuesday, March 23, 2004 followed
by a second meeting on Tuesday, April 13, 2004
at the Houston-Galveston Area Council, 3555 Timmons,
2nd Floor Conference Room A, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The public comment period for the 2025 RTP begins
Friday, March 19, 2004 and continues until
5:00 p.m. on Tuesday,
May 4, 2004.
Key ideas in the final draft of the plan include:
New Express Streets – roadway
design and operations to relieve current overloaded
roadways and reduce congestion by 89,000 hours every
day during evening traffic alone
METRO Solutions – 72 miles of
additional rail, 50 percent more bus service, and recommendations
for new rail studies on U.S. 290, U.S. 90A, SH 249,
U.S. 59N, I-45N, I-10W, SH 225 and SH 288
$23 billion to rebuild and maintain existing
roadways – the highest percentage of
total roadway dollars ever focused on maintenance at
forty-nine percent
Improved traffic safety – $172
million to reconstruct 344 major crash hot spots resulting
in $392 million annual benefit
